内罗毕—肯尼亚禁止进口转基因作物的禁令反映了这个一直被视为农业创新者的国家的一个令人担忧的趋势。这一禁令也是为了确保自身粮食安全而焦头烂额的非洲大陆的一次大倒退。理性、科学的方法必须战胜偏见、恐惧和投机。肯尼亚可以在这方面起到领导作用。

转基因作物(也称基因工程或生物技术作物)一再被证明是安全的,并且成功地提高了全世界农业生产率。但官僚主义、宣传和误导使得数百万非洲农民(包括肯尼亚农民)无法获得这一可以改善生活质量、有助于解决粮食短缺的技术。

目前,由于谷物短缺,一百多万肯尼亚人需要仰仗粮食援助。肯尼亚早期饥荒预警系统网络(Famine Early Warning Systems Network)指出,高企的玉米价格将继续上涨到今年年底,进一步制约食品安全和经济表现。在肯尼亚竭尽全力养活人口、稳定经济之际,转基因技术应该是大受欢迎的提高产量和收入手段,能为农民、消费者和环境带来诸多好处。
