Che tipo di Internet sceglierà l’Europa?

BRUXELLES – Quando la Commissione europea annuncerà la nuova strategia digitale il 6 maggio, dovrà far fronte a una scelta decisiva tra due diversi approcci verso Internet. Opterà per un percorso lungimirante guidato dal mercato? Oppure sceglierà una linea difensiva, superata e retrograda?

Prima la buona notizia: l’alto profilo dell’annuncio programmato dimostra come i leader del continente riconoscano che Internet non può più essere relegato ai margini dell’attività politica  europea. È fondamentale per le performance economiche e per modernizzare la base industriale dell’Europa.

Negli ultimi cinque anni, mentre l’Europa affrontava i suoi guai macroeconomici, gli Stati Uniti e l’Asia facevano progressi, raccogliendo i frutti della digitalizzazione. In base a un recente studio condotto da Plum Consulting, l’information and communications technology (ICT) ha contribuito quasi per l’1,6% alla crescita annua della produttività negli Usa durante questo periodo – doppiando il contributo in Europa. Questo risultato non sorprende però, tenuto conto del quasi 5% di investimenti americani spesi in questo comparto, rispetto al 2% in Europa.
