化石燃料的广泛运用推动了极冰的消失,这不仅造成了全球变暖,而且还因为动力船舶对重油(HFO)的广泛依赖而造成了更直接的后果。重油不仅价格低廉而且储量丰富,但却是有毒和有害的。当船只行驶在北极海域时,二氧化硫和黑炭等污染物质逐步沉积在北极冰盖上。污染物的沉积加速了冰雪的消融,而消融的冰雪加热了海水,反过来又推动了不断强化的自我循环,导致冰雪进一步融化。
