现在,由于描绘先知默罕默德的卡通画引发的冲突开始平息,或者我希望如此。现在很清楚的是,唯一的胜利者就是那些在伊斯兰世界和欧洲的极端分子。

我很遗憾的是,这一风波始发于我的国家。当时,一家报纸天真地想展示言论自由而决定刊登那些卡通画。这件事发生在去年秋天,那时,我公开地反对这一我认为是毫不敏感的行为,因为这伤害了其他人的宗教感情。这也是一个没有必要的挑衅行为,而且其本身就构成了对我们所珍视的、受到宪法保障的言论自由的讽刺。正如我的父亲(他自己也是一个老报人)以前总说的那样:言论自由给你畅所欲言的权利,但是这并不是一项畅所欲言的义务!

当这一风波在几个星期前爆发的时候,发生了许多火上浇油的事情。传播了许多不正确的消息。它们包括古兰经在示威中被焚烧,有关伊斯兰在丹麦地位的虚假信息,以及错误翻译我们的女王说的话等等。这些都增加了愤怒,而且导致焚烧使馆和暴力威胁。
