LONDRES – Atténuer le changement climatique offre des opportunités incomparables pour améliorer la santé et le bien-être humains. En effet, les mesures visant à réduire les émissions de gaz à effet de serre promettent de réduire de manière substantielle les maladies cardiaques, les problèmes respiratoires, le cancer, l’obésité, le diabète, la dépression et les blessures et décès dus à la conduite automobile.

Ces bénéfices pour la santé proviennent du fait que les mesures en faveur du climat affectent nécessairement deux des plus importants déterminants de la santé humaineamp#160;: l’alimentation et le mouvement. Les professionnels de la médecine reconnaissent de plus en plus les bénéfices pour la santé induits par les mesures contre le changement climatique, contrairement aux décideurs politiques. La réalité de ces bénéfices pour la santé implique une diminution spectaculaire du coût net des actions fortes adoptées pour freiner le changement climatique – ce qui signifie que ne pas comprendre leur importance pourrait avoir de sérieuses conséquences environnementales.

De récentes recherches confirment les multiples bénéfices pour la santé des réductions de gaz à effet de serre. Pour atteindre les objectifs d’émissions dans le secteur du transport, il faudrait, outre limiter l’utilisation de la voiture, encourager modestement la marche et le vélo. Sur la base d’évidences épidémiologiques sur la relation entre l’activité physique et la santé, une plus grande activité physique permettrait de réduire de manière spectaculaire les taux de maladies chroniques, avec des baisses de l’ordre de 10 à 20% des maladies ou arrêts cardiaques, de 12 à 18% du cancer du sein, et de 8% des cas de démence.
