NAIROBI – De omvang van het menselijk lijden dat momenteel het door droogte getroffen Somalië verzwelgt is vrijwel onbeschrijflijk. De verwoesting en ellende die het land, dat momenteel een voortdurende recorddroogte meemaakt, in zijn greep houden zijn nauwelijks in woorden te vatten. Ik heb uitgemergelde kuddes vee gezien, levenloos liggend in het stof, en was ter plekke terwijl de toekomst van de bevolking voor onze ogen verdampte.

Maar waar woorden geen recht kunnen doen aan de omvang van deze crisis kunnen ze wel de respons van de wereld leiden. En in dat opzicht zal ik ondubbelzinnig zijn: tenzij de internationale gemeenschap zijn benadering van het aanbieden van hulp in Afrika herziet zal deze cyclus van lijden in stand blijven.

De huidige catastrofe in Somalië is niet uniek. Miljoenen Afrikanen in meer dan een dozijn landen hebben te maken met overeenkomstige uitdagingen, terwijl mislukte oogsten en hardnekkige conflicten ernstig voedselgebrek aandrijven. Volgens sommige schattingen hebben Oost-Afrikaanse boeren de eerste helft van 2017 tot 60% van hun vee verloren – hun belangrijkste bron van inkomen. Geconfronteerd met zulke overweldigende ontberingen ben ik meer boos dan verdrietig.
