世界遗产之死

旧金山,加利福尼亚—气候变化又多了一个牺牲品。今年,世界上最丰富、最复杂的生态系统之一、澳大利亚大堡礁世界遗产区死去近四分之一的珊瑚,是有记录以来规模最严重的珊瑚漂白。即使在大堡礁的最北沿——那里与海岸开发等人类压力距离足够远,因而能够保证珊瑚的健康——珊瑚死亡比例更是高达惊人的50%。

引发这一漂白潮的是高于平均水平的海水温度,而海水温度高于平均水平的可能性因为气候变化而增加了175倍。随着海洋继续从大气中吸收热量,重创大堡礁级别的大规模珊瑚漂白频率可能进步增加,后果也可能更加严重——更不用说其他因温度升高引起的毁灭现象了。

世界遗产是无价之宝,它们——事实上,还有我们的地球——的未来依赖迅速降低导致气候变化的温室气体排放。但许多负责保护境内世界遗产的政府不但没有采取强有力的气候行动;实际上还在积极运行煤矿和煤电等肮脏能源项目。
