从气候变化到阴晴不定的油价,所有的迹象都表明一场全球性的能源危机即将到来。应对这场迫在眉睫的挑战意味着人类不能再忽视太阳每天通过光合作用在有机物质里为我们提供的取之不尽的能源。太阳能使植物吸收碳性气体并由此不仅制造氧气,还制造出其它物质—动物王国的食物和我们的机器所消耗的能源。

自从新石器时代以来,人类就开始培育这些“生物质”作为食物。然而,即便是在当今世界,它的能源潜力也是被低估了。从工业革命开始,人类就从煤炭及其后的石油和天然气中寻找能源,但这导致了不可再生能源的枯竭。

能源生产多元化的现有替代方案是有限的。由于对其安全性和放射性废料处置的担心,核能也有诸多劣势。水电已经得到了广泛应用,但风能和太阳能的利用在结构上呈分散状态,资源的分布也不均衡。
