每年,4百万婴儿在出生后4周内死亡,也就是每天死亡超过1万人。大多数新生儿死亡根本不予登记,除了对他们的家庭外,不为人所知。几乎所有的(99%)的死亡发生在中低收入国家,但是,大部分研究和资助却集中于发生在富国的1%的死亡率的高科技护理之上。

死亡的最大危险发生在生命开始阶段:四分之三的新生儿(三百万)在出生后一周内死亡,至少1百万的婴儿在出生后第一天死亡,许多人是死在家里,没有正规的医疗护理。而且,几乎40%的儿童死亡发生在新生儿阶段,非洲和南亚占总数的三分之二。

不幸的是,发展中国家的儿童存活项目大多集中在出生一个月后发生的肺炎、痢疾、疟疾以及可以通过疫苗防治的死亡原因上,而安全母婴项目大多集中于母亲身上。防治新生儿死亡因此就只能位居母亲和稍大一点的儿童之后了。
