举个例子。1978年以来,美国消费者每年都会被调查当前财务状况比一年前更糟还是更好。在过去25年中,平均有38%的人说情况更好了,有32%的人说情况更糟了。但是,在被问及美国经济总体状况时,平均有47%的人说情况更糟了,只有38%的人说情况更好了。更多的人认为他们的生活在改善,而别人的生活在恶化,也许这就是新闻记者长久以来偏好坏消息的结果。
