Futuras explorações agrícolas na Ásia

MANILA –A escassez de alimentos é uma memória distante para muita gente na Ásia. Mas à medida que a região luta para alimentar e nutrir uma população em crescimento, ela poderá tornar-se novamente numa realidade dolorosa.

A Ásia já é o maior mercado de alimentos do mundo e, em 2050, a população deverá atingir os cinco mil milhões de pessoas –um aumento de 900 milhões de pessoas. Devido à sua classe média em expansão, a região irá provavelmente representar metade do aumento global do consumo anual de carne bovina e de aves, e mais de três quartos do aumento do consumo de peixe, entre o presente ano e 2030. E nessa altura, mais de 60% da procura total de cereais nos países em desenvolvimento serão provenientes do sul e sudeste da Ásia. Para acompanhar esta procura crescente, a produção de alimentos terá de aumentar uns 60 ou 70% comparado ao que acontecia há uma década.

Idealmente, as explorações agrícolas da Ásia poderiam, simplesmente, expandir a sua produção. Mas elas estão terrivelmente mal equipadas para fazê-lo. Para produzir uma quantidade suficiente de alimentos, as explorações agrícolas da Ásia terão de sofrer uma transformação do século XXI.
