全球肉类消费量预计到2020年将增加一倍。然而,在欧洲和南美,人们越来越担心肉蛋生产方式中的伦理问题。为了生产所谓的“白色”实际上是淡粉色的小牛肉,饲养场将新生小牛与母牛分开,故意使之贫血,不饲喂粗饲料,圈养在狭窄的牛圈里,无法行走或转身。大众知道这一情况后,小牛肉的消费量锐减。

在欧洲,疯牛病之所以让许多人震惊,不仅仅是因为它打破了牛肉作为一种安全健康食品的形象,而且因为人们知道了这种病的根源是给牛饲喂羊的脑浆和神经组织。有些人天真地相信牛吃的是草,现在才发现饲喂肉牛的食品种类繁多,从谷物到鱼肉、养鸡场的垃圾稻草(包括鸡的排泻物)以及屠宰场的下脚料。

对畜牧动物所受待遇表示担忧的人绝不仅限于数量不多的素食者或严格素食主义者,也就是不吃一点动物产品的人。尽管社会对素食主义存在强烈的伦理争议,素食主义还没有成为社会主流。更为普遍的观点是,只要动物在宰杀之前可以过一种体面的生活,我们可以吃肉。
