La mort de la mort

Une fois encore, des meurtres ont été perpétrés à grande échelle, cette fois dans une région paradisiaque, la vallée qui se situe entre les fleuves du Tigre et de l'Euphrate. Les meurtres actuels n'ont rien à envier aux innombrables massacres de l'Histoire, bien qu'ils soient plus sobres. Certains suggèrent qu'il était indispensable d'anticiper les futurs meurtres. En tout cas, c'est le triste privilège solitaire de l'homme que de tuer ses semblables et de se suicider.

Cela s'explique, comme nous pouvons légitimement le supposer, par le fait que les êtres humains sont les seuls êtres capables de comprendre la signification de la mort, celle des autres aussi bien que la sienne. Nous savons tous que nous mourrons un jour. « Vous êtes un être humain parmi tant d'autres/Vous êtes le seul à accorder de l'importance à la Beauté/Et vous savez que vous devez partir », a écrit le poète Reiner Kunze. Cette connaissance imprègne chaque moment de notre vie. Media in vita in morte sumus (nous sommes entourés tout au long de notre vie par la mort), précisait une chanson médiévale. Heidegger considérait la connaissance de la mort comme la pierre angulaire de la signification de la vie.

La mort isole chaque individu car la mort collective n'existe pas. Tout le monde meurt seul. Ceux qui en prennent conscience sont alors tentés de nier la signification profonde de la conduite humaine ; tout semble futile en fin de compte car en mourant, nous quittons la société et la société nous quitte. D'un autre côté, seule la connaissance de notre mortalité rend notre existence précieuse. Si nous ne devions pas mourir, tout perdrait son sens. Tout ce que nous accomplissons aujourd'hui, nous pourrions l'accomplir demain.
