Como saben los lectores, se les dice que deben dar a sus hijos alimentos orgánicos, porque los plaguicidas les producirán cáncer. Técnicamente, es cierto que existe una relación entre las substancias químicas y la enfermedad, pero el riesgo es minúsculo en todos los países que tienen una reglamentación adecuada al respecto.

Hay otra amenaza de la que no se les ha hablado demasiado. Una de las mejores formas de evitar el cáncer es la de comer muchas frutas y verduras. Los artículos orgánicos son entre 10 y 20 por ciento más caros que las demás verduras, por lo que naturalmente, la mayoría compramos menos cuando "nos pasamos a lo orgánico".

Si reducen la ingesta de frutas y verduras de sus hijos en tan sólo 0,03 gramos al día (el equivalente de medio grano de arroz) al optar por verduras orgánicas más caras, el riesgo total de cáncer aumenta, en lugar de disminuir. Si omiten la compra de una sola manzana cada veinte años por haberse pasado a lo orgánico, la situación de sus hijos será peor.
