Die richtige Ernährung für Geschlechtergleichberechtigung

KOPENHAGEN – Während des vergangenen Jahrhunderts wurde der Kampf um die Gleichberechtigung von Frauen und Mädchen im Klassenzimmer, an der Wahlurne und in den Vorstandsetagen von Fortune-500-Unternehmen ausgefochten. Doch wenn wir die Ungleichheit zwischen den Geschlechtern je abschaffen wollen, können wir es uns nicht länger leisten, eine ihrer wichtigsten Ursachen und Folgen zu vernachlässigen: die Mangelernährung

Derzeit leidet eine erschütternde Zahl von 1,6 Milliarden Menschen weltweit an Anämie, einer eng mit Eisenmangel verbundenen Erkrankung – und einem der Symptome einer globalen Ernährungskrise, von der überproportional Frauen betroffen sind. Tatsächlich sind doppelt so viele Frauen wie Männer von Anämie betroffen – nämlich fast ein Drittel aller Frauen und Mädchen weltweit –, und sie trägt zu einem Fünftel aller Todesfälle von Müttern bei.

Im Jahr 2012 hat die Weltgesundheitsversammlung das Ziel einer 50%igen Verringerung der Anämie bis 2025 ausgegeben. Doch beim gegenwärtigen Tempo des Fortschritts werden wir dieses Ziel nicht vor 2124 erreichen. Trotz schwer erkämpfter Erfolge für die Frauen bleiben wir bei einem Thema, das zentral für ihre Gesundheit und Entwicklung und auch die ihrer Kinder ist, ein Jahrhundert hinter Plan.
