It seems there were two conflicting lessons to extract from Germany's inter-war economic history. 1) Avoid inflation at all costs (from the '20s). 2) Don't hold onto austerity-inducing monetary totems/ bad recessions cause bad political dynamics (from the 30s). I'm not a Germany expert, but I have wondered why the Germans appear to have chosen to fix on #1 so much more than #2.
