Ethiopia’s New Climate of Fear

The EU, the US, and other major donors will pump about $2.5 billion into Ethiopia this year – a small price to pay to keep Africa’s second largest country from descending into chaos. But donors should use their leverage by demanding that Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's despotic and increasingly violent government respect Ethiopians' fundamental human rights.

Vienna – The European Union, the United States, and other major donors will pump about $2.5 billion into Ethiopia this year, a sum that does not even begin to include the cost of medicines, famine relief, and countless other services provided by non-profit groups in one of the world’s most impoverished countries.
