PRAG – Der Hunger quält die Menschheit schon seit undenklichen Zeiten. Nahezu jede wichtige Gesellschaft wurde durch Hungersnöte geprägt; eine Schätzung legt nahe, dass China in nahezu jedem Jahr zwischen 108 v. Chr. und 1911 in mindestens einer seiner Provinzen eine durch Dürren oder Überschwemmungen verursachte Hungersnot erlebte. Jedoch ist der Kampf gegen den Hunger eine Schlacht, die die Menschheit nun endlich gewinnen könnte.

Es wurde im letzten Viertel des 20. Jahrhunderts jährlich mehr Getreide produziert als in jedem Zeitraum davor, und Getreideernte wird dieses Jahr höher ausfallen als je zuvor in der Geschichte. Seit 1992 ist die Anzahl hungriger Menschen weltweit um mehr als 200 Millionen zurückgegangen, und das, obwohl die Weltbevölkerung um nahezu zwei Milliarden gewachsen ist.

Doch es bleiben enorme Herausforderungen. Bezahlbare, nährstoffreiche Lebensmittel sind überall eine der wichtigsten Prioritäten der Menschen, und einer von neun hat immer noch nicht genug zu essen, um gesund zu bleiben. Angesichts der Tatsache, dass ein Anstieg der heutigen Bevölkerungszahl von 7,3 Milliarden auf 8,5 Milliarden im Jahr 2030 und auf 9,7 Milliarden im Jahr 2050 erwartet wird, wird die Nachfrage nach Lebensmitteln entsprechend steigen. Neben einer größeren Zahl zu stopfender Münder werden Konflikte, wirtschaftliche Turbulenzen, extreme Wetterereignisse und der Klimawandel die Lebensmittelversorgung belasten.
