Los muchos beneficios de la vitamina D

SINGAPUR – La vitamina D ayuda a nuestros organismos a regular los niveles de calcio y fosfato -nutrientes que mantienen saludables los huesos, los dientes y los músculos-. Muchas veces, la luz del sol en nuestra piel puede ser suficiente para permitirnos producir toda la vitamina D que necesitamos. Pero cuando la luz del sol es escasa, la vitamina D debe ser ingerida, y puede ser difícil cumplir con los niveles recomendados sólo a partir de los alimentos. Esto es importante porque los beneficios para la salud de una ingesta adecuada de vitamina D pueden ser aún mayores de lo que se creía anteriormente.

Las deficiencias de vitamina D son universales: afectan a alrededor de mil millones de personas, de todos los grupos etarios y etnicidades, inclusive en países donde hay luz solar todo el año. Por cierto, son particularmente comunes en Oriente Medio, debido en parte a la prevalencia de ropa que cubre la piel y un hábito cultural de no estar expuesto al sol. Ese mismo hábito, junto con la piel más oscura, contribuye a niveles más bajos de vitamina D entre los africanos.

Inclusive en países industrializados, los médicos están detectando un resurgimiento del raquitismo, una enfermedad que debilita los huesos y que había sido, en gran medida, erradicada a través de leche fortificada con vitaminas y otros productos. Y el raquitismo está lejos de ser la única enfermedad que puede ser generada por una deficiencia de vitamina D. La investigación realizada en los últimos diez años sugiere que la vitamina D desempeña un papel de lucha contra las enfermedades mucho más amplio de lo que se creyó en algún momento.
