Hacer a Estados Unidos... abierto al mundo de nuevo

COPENHAGUE – Por más que algunos candidatos presidenciales estadounidenses hablen mal del libre comercio, sigue siendo el pilar de la economía estadounidense. Sin él, el país sería más pobre y su influencia mundial se reduciría considerablemente. Entonces, ¿por qué las críticas al libre comercio se convirtieron en tema central de la competencia presidencial de este año?

Una de las razones más evidentes es la gran ansiedad económica que se vive hoy en Estados Unidos, un país que no termina de recuperarse de los efectos de la crisis financiera de 2008. Demasiados estadounidenses trabajan menos horas y ganan menos que antes de la crisis. Están cansados del statu quo, y los candidatos presidenciales no se equivocan al responder a estas inquietudes.

Pero introducir medidas proteccionistas es un falso remedio que no servirá de nada; por el contrario, solo agravará los problemas de la economía. El libre comercio no es una carga para la economía estadounidense; es una necesidad. Estados Unidos negoció tratados de libre comercio con 20 países. Si bien estos representan solo el 10% del resto de la economía mundial, estos últimos años han comprado casi la mitad de las exportaciones estadounidenses.
