La transformación de la educación científica

CHICAGO – En todo Occidente, los estándares en decadencia de la educación científica amenazan la prosperidad futura. Desde mediados del siglo XIX, la influencia y el crecimiento del Occidente han dependido de la innovación técnica y las hazañas científicas. Pero el Occidente se enfrenta ahora a una considerable competencia de las crecientes naciones de Asia, donde florece la educación en matemáticas y ciencias.

En general, la competencia en ciencia y tecnología es una bendición –mientras más avanzada sea una nación, será mejor cliente. Y la colaboración y los intercambios de personas favorecen la creación de empresas lucrativas y mejoran los niveles de vida. Pero hay que admitir que los decrecientes estándares de educación con el tiempo afectarán el crecimiento económico.

El Occidente, y en particular Estados Unidos, ya han vivido un momento de reconocimiento como éste cuando la URSS lanzó el Sputnik en 1957. El llamado "shock del Sputnik" convenció a Estados Unidos y a Occidente de la necesidad de una reforma radical de la educación científica, sobre todo en cuanto a la contratación, capacitación y retención de maestros.
