La nécessaire réforme de l’enseignement des sciences

CHICAGO – Dans tout l’occident, le déclin du niveau de l’enseignement des sciences menace la prospérité à venir. Depuis la moitié du XIXe siècle, l’influence et la croissance de l’occident dépendent d’innovations techniques et de prouesses scientifiques. Mais l’occident doit aujourd’hui faire face à la rude concurrence des nations asiatiques émergentes, où l’enseignement en mathématiques et en sciences est florissant.

En général, la concurrence dans les domaines de la science et de la technologie est un bienfait – plus une nation est avancée, plus elle est bonne cliente. La collaboration et les échanges de personnes permettent de faire des affaires profitables et d’accéder à de meilleurs niveaux de vie. Mais il faut reconnaître que la chute du niveau des enseignements finira par nuire à la croissance économique.

L’occident, tout particulièrement les États-Unis, a déjà eu un aperçu de ce genre quand l’URSS a lancé Spoutnik en 1957. Ce qu’on a appelé le “choc Spoutnik” a convaincu l’Amérique et l’occident de la nécessité de réformes radicales de l’enseignement des sciences, et tout particulièrement le recrutement, la formation et le maintien des professeurs.
