转变科学教育方式

芝加哥—在整个西方社会,科学教育水平的持续下降正在威胁着未来的繁荣。自从十九世纪中叶以来,西方社会一直依靠它在技术上的创新和科学上的大胆行为来提高它的影响力和实现增长。但是西方社会现在面临着来自亚洲新兴国家的激烈竞争,那里的数学和科学教育现在进行得非常成功。

总体上讲,科技上的竞争是一件幸事。一个国家越发达,那么它就会是一个更好的客户。而人员的协作和交流有助于提高商业利润和人们的生活水平。但是我们必须认识到教育水平的下降将最终阻碍经济的增长。

西方社会,尤其是美国,在苏联于1957年发射人造卫星的那一段时间曾经对这一问题有很好的认识。所谓的“史波尼克的震撼”使美国和西方社会的人认识到需要对科学教育进行彻底的改革,尤其是在教师的招募、培训和挽留上。
