当前,精英阶层在世界各地都受到围攻。在美国,边远地区的“绿党运动”攻击的是是在纽约,华盛顿和好莱坞所谓“自由派精英”。在欧洲,民粹主义的鼓动者,例如荷兰的哥特·怀尔德斯大肆攻击精英阶层的伊斯兰“绥靖主义”。在泰国,来自东北部农村的“红衫军”也在反对曼谷的军方及政界社会名流。

即便相当多数人不愿参与投票,民主的首要价值还是政府必须以民意为基础。很清楚的是,全球范围对执政当局的愤怒已经演变成一种危险的俗套。在民主国家中,越来越多的人感到没有被代表,焦虑和愤怒。于是他们将矛头指向了精英阶层。

这在当今非常普遍,但各国情况迥异。美国的民粹运动和泰国相似。文化种族在美国有着非常重要的位置——例如传统的持枪文化,敌视有着哈佛教育背景的黑人总统等。
