有关美国大选的争论势头依然不减。乔治·W·布什总统如何获得胜出参议员约翰·克里的三百万选票?并且,如何使共和党续掌参、众两院优势?面对种种答案,人们难以达成一致,但有两个观点却不断出现在各种解释中。

首先是人格。在一个充满无常和威胁的年代,比起未经证实的候选人,人们对于他们已经了解的总统更为信任。第二个问题是价值观。与其说人们投票给某种特定政策,还不如说他们为某一套价值体系投票。事实上,(据说)一些认同克里政策的选民却投票给了布什,正是因为他们对布什全面的看法感到放心。

很明显,如今的美国已经随着选举形势被严重分裂。东部、北部各州组成了一道蓝色(民主)拱形,自西部中心到南部横跨着一块巨大的红色(共和)区域。除此之外,在各地,这种分裂也被再次加剧。Gerrymandering,即对选区进行不公正的划分以使某一政党受益的做法已经不再必要。不管是共和党还是民主党的支持者,他们都趋于搬往一个与大部分其他人享有一致价值观的地区。
