Las anteojeras de Estados Unidos

SINGAPUR – Llegó la hora de pensar lo impensable: la era de la supremacía estadounidense en asuntos internacionales tal vez esté llegando a su fin. La gran pregunta que debemos hacernos conforme ese momento se avecina es: ¿está Estados Unidos bien preparado para lo que vendrá?

El ascenso de Asia en las últimas décadas no es simplemente una historia de crecimiento económico, sino del renacer de una región, un tiempo en que las mentes de su gente vuelven a abrirse y sus perspectivas se renuevan. El continente avanza hacia la recuperación del papel central que ya tuvo en la economía mundial, con tanto ímpetu que es prácticamente imposible detener su marcha. Es cierto que la transformación a veces no estará exenta de altibajos, pero hay algo que ya es seguro: el siglo que viene será un siglo asiático y cambiará radicalmente el funcionamiento del mundo.

Los líderes mundiales (tanto políticos como intelectuales) tienen la responsabilidad de preparar a sus respectivas sociedades para los cambios globales que se avecinan. Pero en Estados Unidos, muchos de ellos están rehuyendo esa responsabilidad.
