发自纽约——上周平面媒体界弥漫着各种各样的传言:100名《纽约时报》新闻部门的记者将被买断工龄——如果不接受这个处理结果的话,他们就得被直接解雇;英国各报章急剧削减预算;康泰纳什出版公司大幅裁员——8位在《Glamour》杂志任职的资深编辑丢掉了饭碗。不管是美国国内还是国外,人们都能感到先期预见的新闻出版界内部动乱正在加剧,甚至已经达到某种临界值了。

而在最近,一所著名新闻学院的校长向我回应某些在她的同行中普遍存在的共识,她说:“我们正在培养学生进入一个等他们毕业时已经不复存在的专业领域。”

现实就摆在那里:报纸读者,至少那些生活在西方的读者的年龄正不断增大;而那些更年轻的读者则喜欢从网上获取信息,这些人花在读新闻上的时间比平面媒体读者要少得多;最让整个平面媒体产业苦恼的是,原来愿意买报纸的人们如今却不愿为出现在电脑显示屏上的同样内容付钱。
