L’amertume du sucre

PRINCETON – Si le sucre est un édulcorant, l’éthique qui régit sa production est loin d’être alléchante. Dans le cadre de sa campagne « La face cachée des marques », Oxfam International a publié un rapport intitulé « La fièvre du sucre » qui démontre comment notre consommation de sucre nous implique dans des accaparements de terres qui violent les droits humains de communautés parmi les plus pauvres au monde. Des consommateurs mieux informés et plus soucieux d’éthique pourraient changer cette situation.

Nous sommes génétiquement programmés pour aimer les aliments sucrés, et plus les individus deviennent riches, plus ils consomment du sucre. L’augmentation conséquente du prix du sucre a poussé les producteurs à chercher de nouvelles terres sur lesquelles cultiver la canne à sucre.

Que les pauvres soient perdants quand leurs intérêts entrent en conflit avec ceux des riches et puissants n’est pas surprenant. Le rapport d’Oxfam cite plusieurs exemples de producteurs ayant acquis des terres sans le consentement de ceux qui y vivent, transformant les paysans en ouvriers agricoles sans terre. En voici un exemple.
