发自荷兰乌得勒支市——加拿大人格洛莉亚·泰勒是一位肌萎缩侧索硬化症(amyotrophic lateral sclerosis,也称卢伽雷病)患者。在数年内她的肌肉将逐渐失去功能,以致其无法走路,使用双手,咀嚼,吞咽,说话,最终连呼吸都无法进行,然后就只有死亡。泰勒不想忍受上述过程,希望能在自己选定的某个时候死去。

在加拿大自杀并不是一项罪行,因此正如泰勒所说:“我就是无法理解为何法律允许那些身患绝症但活动自如的人在受够了折磨之后举枪自杀,理由仅仅是因为他们可以把枪稳稳地拿在手里,而由于我的病影响了我行动以及控制自己身体的能力,就不允许我在同情者的协助下用药物实施同等的行为。”

泰勒认为法律使她面临一个残酷的抉择:要么在还可以享受生活而且有能力自杀时结束自己的生命,要么放弃其他人也拥有的按照自身意愿终结生命的权利。她向法院上诉,认为《刑法》中的禁止她获得他人协助下自杀的条款违反了《加拿大权利和自由宪章》,后者给予了加拿大人生命权,自由权,人身安全权和平等权。
