农业的坏药方

圣迭戈—我们大部分人,当由我们的行为所造成的威胁还没有进入视线之前,不会想到这些威胁的存在。对抗生素的使用就是如此。明智而审慎地使用的话,抗生素能够拯救生命、阻止致命疾病的传播。但抗生素的效力正在因为它们在农业中的不审慎使用而被浪费。

如今,全世界一大半抗生素用量被用在了食品生产中。农民用抗生素治疗牲口感染。问题在于他们常常用错了抗生素,要么把它们用于补救不合理的农业做法——如过度拥挤的工厂化农场让疾病更加容易传播——要么把它们用于加快生长和降低生产成本。

这些做法独立看来也许无甚伤害,但它们的总效应相当危险。抗生素通过人们所吃的食物或动物产生的废物而进入环境中,导致抗生素耐药性加剧。而这给人类健康带来了非常不利的影响。
