La alimentación virtuosa

CAMBRIDGE, MA – A lo largo de los siglos, la máxima “eres lo que comes” ha definido la manera que tenemos de enfocar nuestra dieta. La interpretación predominante es sencilla: nuestros cuerpos, al igual que los alimentos que ingerimos, son compuestos químicos. Para vivir una vida larga y saludable y aprovechar al máximo nuestro potencial, debemos consumir las sustancias químicas adecuadas; es decir, alimentos con los nutrientes correctos. Sin embargo, hasta no hace mucho este dicho se entendía de modo bastante distinto, lo que indica un profundo cambio en la manera como pensamos en nuestra dieta y como nos vemos a nosotros mismos, cambio con fuertes implicancias sobre el modo en que hoy se habla de la salud.

En la medicina griega y romana de la antigüedad, la prevención era el concepto clave. El "régimen", conocido comúnmente como "dietética", prescribía un estilo de vida ideado para mantener saludables a las personas. De hecho, si bien los doctores hacían todo lo que podían para curar a los pacientes enfermos, se consideraba que la dietética era el área más importante de la práctica médica. Después de todo, se suponía que con una buena dieta nunca sería necesario buscar una cura.

La dietética consistía en la prescripción de una manera ordenada de vivir que orientaba a las personas no solamente en términos de lo que comían y bebían, sino de todos los aspectos manejables de sus vidas que pudieran tener efectos sobre su bienestar, como los lugares donde vivían, el ejercicio, sus patrones de sueño, los movimientos intestinales, la actividad sexual y un área que la medicina actual deja de lado: el control emocional.
