“中国模式”年

2008年将会是中国年。奥运会的举办可能会提高中国在全球的威望。毫无疑问,会组织得很完美,不会看到抗议者、无家可归者、持不同信仰者或任何其他类型的扫兴者。当美国经济被进一步拖进房地产坏账的泥潭时,中国将会继续保持繁荣。由世界最著名的建筑师设计的令人振奋的新建筑将使北京和上海抗上去就像二十一世纪现代化的模型。更多的中国人将会出现在每年一度的世界富豪榜中。而中国的艺术家会在国际艺术品拍卖会上叫出其他人只敢想象的价格。

仅仅用一代人的时间就从近乎赤贫和血腥的暴政走出来绝对是一个伟大的成就,中国人应该为此得到祝贺。但是中国的成功故事却几乎是自二十世纪三十年代的法西斯主义以来自由民主所面临的最严峻的挑战。

这并不是说中国构成了巨大的军事威胁,与美国或者甚至是日本的战争只是少数极端民族主义的怪人和偏执狂臆想出来的事物。这是一个理念上的问题,不管它的环境效应,会怎样中国的政治经济模式正在取得胜利,并且看起来是自由民主的资本主义的一个很有吸引力的替代模式。
