El crisol mediterráneo

BERLÍN – Para la mayoría de los europeos, el Mediterráneo es un objeto anual de deseo: el idilio vacacional, donde pasan las mejores semanas del año, pero la soleada vista de la región para muchos europeos ha quedado cubierta por los amenazadores nubarrones del pesimismo.

Dentro de la Unión Europea, el feo término PIGS (Portugal, Italia/Irlanda, Grecia, España) es ahora un lugar común, que se refiere a países que han puesto en peligro la estabilidad del euro y están obligando a los europeos del Norte a aplicar costosos rescates. Donde no hace mucho el sol y la solidaridad estaban a la orden del día, ahora la depresión y la confrontación son la norma. Peor aún: la crisis de la deuda y de la confianza de Europa es también la más grave desde su comienzo: está en juego nada menos que el futuro del propio proyecto europeo.

Y ahora la crisis ha llegado a la ribera meridional del Mediterráneo, en forma de una revolución en Túnez y un enfrentamiento político en el Líbano que ha vuelto a colocar a este país al borde de la guerra y del desastre. Al tambalearse simultáneamente los Estados miembros mediterráneos de la UE, se avecinan grandes cambios en la vecindad meridional de Europa,
