В результате, третья часть всех американских домовладельцев с ипотечными кредитами уже «тонет в долгах» - их ипотечная задолженность превышает стоимость дома. Для шестой части этих домов долг на 20% превышает цену дома.

Кроме того, высокое соотношение стоимости активов к сумме кредита в США вместе с финансовыми проблемами домохозяйств увеличивают число неплатежей и лишений должников права выкупа заложенного имущества. Если быть более точным, то растущий уровень безработицы, наряду с большим количеством людей, которым приходится работать с неполной занятостью, увеличило число тех, кто не может позволить себе совершать ежемесячные ипотечные платежи.
