发自伊斯坦布尔——有种对市场的简单化(实际上是幼稚)观点就是市场几乎还处于一个“原始状态”,而且最好的方法就是任由其自由运作而不被政府干预。同样在政治上也存在着简单化的民主观念,即它是一个举行定期选举,赋予胜出者治理权而不会对其进行约束的政治体系。

当然实际情况远比这个要复杂。市场只有在制度及法律框架下才能起作用,其中包括产权、合同的强制执行、质量和信息控制及许多其它用来管理交易的法规。

类似地,虽然竞争性选举对所有民主体系来说都是必不可少的,而选举结果导致的“赢者通吃”且权力集中的局面却是无法与民主政治长期相容的。运作良好的民主国家根植于复杂的宪法和其它法律之中,这些法律使行政、立法和司法权力独立开来,并保护言论自由、集会自由以及那些选举落败者和平发表异议的权利。
