性别差距的代价

世界各地的劳动妇女一直都在抱怨比男性工资低的不公平状况。但是男性和女性之间的工资差异不仅是不公平的问题,也会对经济发展造成损害。

根据国际货币基金组织经济学家的计算,“性别差距”每年使世界经济损失成百上千亿美元。对40个贫穷和富裕国家的研究表明:女性的经济和社会地位与总体经济增长之间有着极强的联系。女性缺乏教育、医疗和经济社会领域的机会——无论是绝对的还是相对男性而言——都会阻碍经济的发展。恰恰相反,经济的发展能够改善妇女的从属地位。

在《2007年世界儿童状况报告》中,联合国儿童基金会(UNICEF)认为两性平等能够带来双重的收益:受过良好教育的健康女性能够培育出受过良好教育的健康的下一代。联合国儿童基金会认为,女性同男性相比对家庭的责任感更重,她们在食品、药物和子女教育上的开销也更多。但联合国儿童基金会给发展中国家提供的解决方法——即让女性承担家务和抚育孩子的责任——事实上却是导致问题的原因。
