Er und seine Ladung können in einem Monat überallhin auf der Welt transportiert werden, wo es geeignete Häfen, Schienennetze, Lokomotiven, Plattformwagen, Sattelschlepper, Dieseltreibstoff und Straßen gibt.

Die Rede ist vom modernen Frachtcontainer, mit dem unzerbrechliche, haltbare Waren aus jeder modernen Fabrik mit einer Verladestelle in jedes moderne Lagerhaus überall auf der Welt für rund 1 % des Verkaufswerts befördert werden können. Tatsächlich kann der Container für geringe Kosten von vielleicht $ 5000 transportiert werden – weniger als der Preis eines Flugzeugtickets der ersten Klasse, wie Marc Levinson bemerkt, der Autor des hervorragenden Buches The Box: How the Shipping Container Made the World Smaller and the World Economy Bigger (Der Kasten: Wie der Schiffscontainer die Welt kleiner und die Weltwirtschaft größer machte) .

All dies ist ungefähr seit den 60er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts geschehen. Damals konnten die Kosten der internationalen Verschiffung über den Ozean für die meisten Waren leicht zwischen 10 % und 20 % des Verkaufswertes betragen. Der Frachtcontainer hat alles geändert.
