Le pouvoir d'influence et le pouvoir de la matraque

LONDON – On se souvient d'une petite phrase de Bill Clinton lors de sa première campagne présidentielle au début des années 1990. Alors que l'un de ses aides expliquait quel était le principal thème de la campagne, Clinton lui a lancé : "C'est l'économie, crétin". L'économie explique tout : l'emploi, les prix, l'épargne, l'immobilier. D'elle dépend le moral des ménages et les programmes politiques.

Une étrange publicité publiée récemment dans un magazine à papier glacé va dans ce sens. Elle concerne des bagages de luxe. On y voit Gorbatchev assis à l'arrière d'une limousine, sur le siège à coté de lui un attaché-case en cuir d'une marque de luxe. Il passe à coté du mur de Berlin. Le message ? "Qui s'intéresse au mur, oublions la politique, il n'y a que l'argent qui compte".

Peut-être est-ce la réalité ! Aujourd'hui le monde doit faire face aux conséquences des énormes emprunts de l'Amérique et à celles de l'avidité et la stupidité de nombreuses banques d'envergure internationale. Les automobilistes se plaignent de la hausse du prix de l'essence. Face à l'augmentation des prix dans l'alimentation, les ménagères des pays pauvres, mais parfois aussi dans des pays moins pauvres - craignent de devoir nourrir moins bien leur famille. En Asie, en Afrique, au Moyen-Orient et en Amérique latine leurs maris et leurs fils descendent dans la rue à cause du prix de la nourriture. L'économie est donc une grande affaire. Mais deux autres sujets se disputent notre attention. Ils sont révélateurs de la situation mondiale en ce nouveau siècle. Après tout, il  n'y a pas que l'économie !
