亚特兰大—去年年底，俄罗斯总统普京宣布俄罗斯已完成“无懈可击”的新型高超音速可携核导弹“先锋”（Avangard）的最后测试，称之为给俄罗斯的“最好的新年礼物”。普京不断地加码日益频繁的审判日口风，世界是不是应该为核冲突做好准备？

去年，普京谈及“核启示录”的次数比过去十年任何一位西方领导人都要多，这让一些人猜测他也许是在威胁北约和美国。但普京将灾难性结果的风险归咎于西方，将俄罗斯假想的启用核武器行为说成是报复或反击。

比如，去年3月，在联邦大会的总统演讲中，普京提到“过去15年中那些试图加速军备竞赛、寻求获得针对俄罗斯的单方面优势的人”采取了“非法”限制和制裁，意在“遏制”俄罗斯的发展，包括俄罗斯军事发展。所有这些人，普京宣称，应该“停止破坏我们身处其中的这艘叫做地球的船。”

Thank God, the year 2019 is coming to an end, and they have not unleashed the nukes disaster on us. Dear God Almighty, do not allow them to ever do so. Amen.

The only study of the effects of a nuclear war were based on an India Pakistan war and showed severe drops in global temperatures from the carbon in the upper atmosphere. A large percentage of the northern hemisphere would just starve to death as crops don't grow in frozen ground. If either America or Russia launch it is anyone's guess but I suspect even the cockroaches will not survive.

We should not blame Putin for stating the obvious, Russia is under threat. When it comes to our nuclear arsenal, not only is America ready to launch but we are also about to spend a great deal of money to increase that ability. What the world would look like following a nuclear war has been the subject of much speculation. A great number of variables feed into such scenarios but we should be troubled that today it seems many people consider nuclear weapons as an acceptable tool or option for us to use in our defense if we are attacked. More on the size of our arsenal and the plans to spend a huge amount to upgrade the delivery system in the article below.

This article is a typical XX Century Cold War propaganda to create a heinous Russian "enemy".

Forget it. Think about the following´. To gain some perspective, let's compare Russia and Spain. Russia is a geopolitical heavyweight. Spain is a country irrelevant geopolitically.

Russia GDP beats Spanish GDP by less than 10%
Russian land is 34 times bigger than Spain
Russian population triples Spanish population

Spanish military equipment is composed of a slingshot and two paper planes.
Russia has hypersonic missiles, whatever diabolic weaponry you may figure out, nuclear warheads included.

Honestly, something smells fishy here...

If Spain is one of the top over indebted countries in the world, we must conclude that Russian economists in charge of public finances deliver outstanding results for the monnies they manage!!! Harvard Business School, are you listening?

Russia (President Putin, more correctly) aims at being the main commodities provider for Europe and China. Basta. They are interested in any single war. Posturing and rethoric aside, mind you. Russia knows it has zero chances to win any war against China or the US. And that kind of war would crater their commodities trade.

Seriously, there does not seem to be any Russian interest in any Apocalypse.
But of course, creating a diabolic enemy is essential for the geopolitical game.

The article is one sided, so poor. It absolves well documented Western actions that threaten Russia survival, and only censures Russian responses to these threats.

I give the author a 2/10.

  Your comment is spot-on - as the saying goes - "You are not paranoid when you know that they are out to get you". And Russia and Putin are in the crosshairs of an America losing its empire through its own faults, and not the other way around.

You ignore the fact that russian videos of "new weapons" were CARTOONS FROM YouTube, specifically the missiles that "nuked USA" in video shown by putin huilo were from Ukraine, and will go out of service by 2020. Mass murder of millions being "to instruct" was specifically referring to Holodomor, genocide of Ukrainians.

Finally, "world war" is only possible if rest of the world joins Ukraine in taking down russian federation, as ruskies have no allies, and it's doubtful ones who take their side: Assad's regime forces (losing), Mugabe's Zimbabwe (deposed), Maduro's Venezuela (in process), Iran (with Hezbollah, regularly kebabed by Israel) and North Korea, will fight for russia. Ruskies are alone, desperately alone. It took them 242 days to destroy a sole airport in Donetsk. They fail to take a single village in Ukraine for last 4 years, yet speak of nuking Paris and taking London, show vids of destroying Florida and rehearse burning down Bundestag. Exactly how Kim behaves. Russians are deluded, they get folie a doux on national scope.

The world is certainly heading for world war. But the cause is not so much the colourful religious imagery described but in the struggle for power. Russia was even more steeped in Christian orthodoxy a hundred years yet allied with pluralist republican France because it served its interests to do so. Power (manifested as interest) has been present in every conflict of the past – no exception. It is the underlying motivation for war. Other cultural factors might change, but not power. Interest cuts across all apparently unifying principles: family, kin, nation, religion, ideology, politics - everything. We unite with the enemies of our principles, because that is what serves our interest. It is power, not any of the above concepts, that is the cause of war. It is the one thing we will destroy ourselves for, as well as everyone else. When core interests are threatened and existential threat looms nations go to war. As a result every civilization/nation eventually gets the war it is trying to avoid: utter defeat.
