为何新闻自由是好事

伦敦—新闻自由和独立是全世界民主的主要成分,据2015年世界新闻自由指数,它正在以令人警觉的速度下滑。但自由而独立的新闻所提供的透明性和警惕性不但对民主至关重要;也是对抗从腐败到企业恶行的破坏经济繁荣的力量的强大武器。简言之,没有高质量的新闻,就不可能实现更优秀、更强大、更坚挺的经济。

每一天我们都会看到新闻日益受到威胁乃至袭击,不管是来自极权主义领导人,还是因为不可持续的商业模式所赐。无论如何,我们比以往任何时候都需要关于经济趋势和商业活动的严肃的调查报道和明智分析,而实现这一点的能力正在快速消退。

一个问题是,随着终端印刷广告的减少,媒体公司日益难以补贴深度报道通常需要的长期研究。但是,这类报道辨别可能影响多年后的政治日程和公共生活的问题,并把它们曝光于天下,其影响可能十分巨大。
