Wissenschaftlern ist leicht zu schmeicheln, wenn man von ,,Wissensmanagement" und ,,Wissensgesellschaft" spricht. Sie denken oft, diese Begriffe unterstrichen die zentrale Rolle der Universitäten in der Gesellschaft. Tatsächlich aber sagen sie uns, dass das Gegenteil der Fall ist: die Gesellschaft an sich ist ein Nährboden für die Produktion von Wissen, demgegenüber die Universitäten keine besonderen Privilegien oder Vorteile besitzen.

Damit hatten die Wissenschaftler nicht gerechnet, weil sie nach Wissen traditionell um seiner selbst strebten, ohne Rücksicht auf Kosten oder Konsequenzen. Jetzt sind sie zunehmend dem globalen Druck ausgesetzt, Universitäten für die Massen zu öffnen und die Gründe dafür haben mit dem Streben nach reinem Wissen üblicherweise nichts zu tun. Heute erwartet man von Universitäten, dass sie Referenzen liefern und zum Motor des wirtschaftlichen Wachstums werden.

Als Folge davon verlieren die Akademiker die Kontrolle über ihre Leistungsstandards an die ,,Wissensmanager". Universitäten sind, so der frühere Herausgeber von Fortune , Tom Stewart, ,,ineffiziente Organisationen" mit zuviel ,,menschlichem", aber nicht genug ,,strukturellem Kapital".
