Here is the testimony of priest Edward Orłowski who in three years served with father Josef Kębliński, the rector of Jedwabne parish in the time of sovjet and german occupation and time of mord on Jews July the 10th 1941:

After the expulsion of Russians from Jedwabne Germans passed the rectory, which housed the Municipal Office of Soviet Union (Solsowiet) back, asking father Kębliński to take their chaplain to his apartment.
Police station was located at the pharmacy. The priest Kębliński spoke German perfectly so the gendarmes often used him as a translator. Father Kębliński told me that just before the murder gendarmes were talking that they have to make "the order" with the Jews. The priest informed trusted Jews, and they wanted to bribe local German authorities and asked the priest for mediation. At the suggestion of the priest gendarmes responded that it did not help because the order came from the top - the Jews must die. Priest Kębliński mentioned that Jews themselves three times wore ransom to the Germans, who met them, but nevertheless stated that the order must be executed. On 10 July 1941 two columns of cars arrived from the direction of Wizna and Lomza. The whole town was surrounded by the Germans, it was done very precisely, priest Kębliński described it using the word "masterpiece". He had no idea how so many people completely unknown to him emerged, speaking Polish and German. He approached command post of this action. He tried to defend the innocent women and children, but he heard the words "you fool do not know who is in charge here, if you want to keep the head on the neck - get out - raus ". The action commanded a high-ranking Gestapo officer.
