Para cumplir un propósito de Año Nuevo

MELBOURNE -- ¿Ha concebido el lector un propósito de Año Nuevo? Tal vez se haya propuesto ponerse en forma física, perder peso, ahorrar más dinero o beber menos alcohol o puede haberse tratado de un propósito más altruista: ayudar a los necesitados o reducir su huella de carbono. Pero, ¿lo cumple?

El año 2010 acaba de comenzar, pero los estudios hechos demuestran que menos de la mitad de los que conciben propósitos de Año Nuevo consiguen cumplirlos ni siquiera durante un mes. ¿Qué nos revela eso sobre la naturaleza humana y sobre nuestra capacidad para vivir prudente o éticamente?

Parte del problema radica, naturalmente, en que concebimos propósitos de hacer cosas que, de lo contrario, no es probable que hagamos. Sólo un anoréxico concebiría el propósito de tomar un helado al menos una vez a la semana y sólo un adicto al trabajo el de pasar más tiempo delante de la televisión. De modo que aprovechamos la ocasión del Año Nuevo para intentar cambiar el comportamiento que puede ser más difícil de cambiar, por lo que el fracaso resulta una clara posibilidad.
