    伦敦--中国为何在西藏如此行事?西藏为何对北京政府如此重要?问题的核心是,没有比中国的统一受到挑战更加让中国统治者担忧的事情了。而且,他们担心一个地区性的争议如果不尽早结束就会演变成全国性的分裂。没有其他事情比这个让他们更加焦虑。

    科索沃最近单方面宣布独立让中国政府对于西藏的抗议更加担心。尽管科索沃独立的支持者们认为这一事件并不确定国际先例,但是中国的统治者们却担心正好相反。而且,台湾即将来到的总统选举已经进一步提高了中国政府的紧张程度。

    台湾的民意调查显示,台北前市长、国民党侯选人马英九将会击败执政的民进党侯选人谢长庭。但是中国有人担心现任总统、民进党的陈水扁正在寻找借口来阻止倾向独立阵营的败选。他目前正在鼓吹就台湾是否应该加入联合国举行全民公决,而中国则把这一事态视为挑衅以及对中国统一的威胁。
