一生中曾受过临床抑郁症影响的人口大约占人口总数的四分之一左右。这是一种长期而严重的精神疾病,得这种病的患者从正常的悲伤转化成一种失望、冷漠、委靡和疲惫的精神状态。但无论界定何等精确,临床抑郁症对不同的人都有着不同的含义,对患者的影响也从轻微到严重各不相同。

轻微的抑郁会使患者只考虑自己和别人的短处,大多数时间都感到愤懑、急躁和生气,为自己感到悲伤,需要别人不停地安慰。轻微抑郁症还能导致多种生理症状,但这些症状却并非由于任何疾病的结果。

随着抑郁状态的加重,病人除了感到极度的悲伤和无助,还会伴有丧失自信、内疚、失忆和精力难以集中等症状,导致他们陷入极度的痛苦之中。更糟的是还可能伴有日常肌体功能的改变。往日的生活节奏似乎被彻底打乱:病人或者无法入睡、或者昏睡不醒、或者无法进食、或者暴饮暴食。他们对通常令人愉快的行为热情逐渐消退,有时甚至感到活着没有意义,死了反倒是一种解脱。
