Come aggiustare la filiera dell’innovazione

CAMBRIDGE – Da studente laureato al MIT, ho avuto l’opportunità di lavorare con il professore Robert Langer e Ram Sasisekharan in un ambiente immerso nel pensiero innovativo. Ci siamo chiesti cosa fosse possibile e siamo stati spinti a perseguire le tecnologie rivoluzionarie che si credevano del tutto impossibili. Questa esperienza ha infuso in me un credo semplice ma potente: pensare in grande.

L’innovazione è difficile. Se si è disposti a oltrepassare il confine dell’ignoto, si può perseguire una strada che promette il maggiore impatto potenziale. Nell’esplorare l’ampia gamma di tematiche – tra cui energia, agricoltura e medicina – un approccio, nella mia esperienza, è emerso come il più efficace: iniziare avendo in mente la fine. Identificando i problemi e prevedendo la migliore soluzione, è possibile definire la serie di vincoli collegati all’innovazione tecnologica e stabilire un chiaro, ma spesso difficile, percorso verso la sua realizzazione.

Un requisito fondamentale di questo approccio è l’apertura mentale, scevra da dogmi idiosincratici. Coloro che lavorano approfonditamente in un settore hanno una visione fondata di ciò che è possibile, sulla base di una combinazione di successi precedenti, bias di citazione, limiti correnti di conoscenza e verità, laddove è spesso difficile distinguere queste fonti. Ma il nuovo arrivato che fa delle domande di base inizia a notare incoerenze logiche, da cui sorgono le reali costrizioni sulle soluzioni e sui limiti tecnologici.
