Distruggere Citigroup

WASHINGTON, DC – La campagna per le elezioni presidenziali americane è già cominciata. Le elezioni si terranno a novembre 2016 e solo pochi candidati sono ufficialmente scesi in campo, ma la competizione per la promozione e lo sviluppo delle idee – sia in privato che in pubblico – è in pieno svolgimento.

All’inizio di questo mese, Citigroup ha approfittato di questo costruttivo momento politico, cogliendo un’occasione per mettere a segno una vittoria tattica – ma che equivale a un errore decisivo. Attraverso il linguaggio legislativo stilato senza dubbio dagli stessi lobbisti di Citigroup, la banca ha insistito con successo per ottenere l’abrogazione di alcune riforme del Dodd-Frank Act del 2010. La normativa è stata approvata dopo che, all’ultimo minuto, è stata aggiunta una legge di spesa – una tattica grazie alla quale ci sono stati pochi dibattiti alla Camera dei Rappresentanti e nessuno in Senato.

In un colpo solo, i dirigenti di Citigroup hanno dimostrato sia la loro continua influenza politica a Washington sia il loro continuo desiderio di assumersi un elevato rischio finanziario (che è ciò che consente questa particolare riforma). Fare pressioni per avere il permesso di aumentare il rischio è esattamente quello che la banca americana ha fatto tra gli anni ’90 e il 2000 sotto la presidenza di Bill Clinton e George W. Bush – con conseguenze catastrofiche per l’intera economia nel 2007-09.
