从贝多芬到北京

伦敦—17年前的7月1日,我登上了英国皇家游艇离开香港。前一天午夜,中国根据被称为中英联合声明(Joint Declaration)的国际协定(在联合国制定)收回香港主权。该协定保证香港将在邓小平的“一国两制”方针下保持50年不变。法治精神以及多元主义自由精神——程序正义以及言论、集会和信仰自由——将继续充当香港繁荣与稳定的基础。

光阴荏苒,很快就过去了17年。作为末代港督,这个日子对我个人来说意义重大,对香港人民来说更是如此。7月1日,我出席了在牛津附近的一间乡间别墅举行的盛大的贝多芬《费德里奥》(Fidelio)演出。《费德里奥》是贝多芬唯一的歌剧,初写于1805年(即拿破仑在奥斯特里茨(Austerlitz)获胜的那一年),重写于1814年(拿破仑退位的那一年),是对能在各个社会都引起共鸣的基本人类价值——自由和反暴政——的伟大的文化表达。

《费德里奥》的高潮出现在政治犯从地牢中暂时释放出来时。“哦,天堂!救赎!幸福,” 他们说道,“哦,自由!我们会达到你们吗?”在他们歌颂自由的同时,落日余晖让犯人和牛津郡的观众们感到炫目。大自然也在彰显这一信念的重要性。
