无法忘怀的天安门

伦敦—三十年前的这个月,我在北京,以英国发展部长的身份参加亚洲开发银行年会。但那次会议的成果——包括第一次有来自台湾的代表一起参与——被在北京发生事件所遮掩。而1989年在中国发生的事情,至今仍在引起深刻的回响,包括香港。

当年5月底,北京的大事本应是苏联领导人戈尔巴乔夫前来进行国事访问;中国领导人急切地想向他展示有序的共产主义政权如何治理一个伟大的国家,与在改革(perestroika)中解体的苏联形成鲜明对比。但一场渴望自由的节日大爆炸就像一场意料之外的烟花表演,为双方送上了大礼。

受到学生示威的刺激,似乎大半北京人民都走上了街头,要求更多的自由和民主问责。人民力量的展示很快传播到其他城市。这是一场热情洋溢的自发的运动。没人——体制也好,示威者也好——知道接下来做什么。
