Welcome to She Writes, a monthly newsletter featuring women whose ideas deserve wider attention. In each issue, we highlight women to watch and share a selection of Project Syndicate's most incisive woman-authored commentaries from the previous month.

Beth English and Esther Ngumbi

Beth English is Director of the Project on Gender in the Global Community at the Liechtenstein Institute on Self-Determination at Princeton University, a lecturer in the Princeton Writing Program, and an instructor with Princeton’s Prison Teaching Initiative. She is the producer and host of the podcast Working History, which highlights the work of leading labor historians, activists, and practitioners. And she is the author of A Common Thread: Labor, Politics, and Capital Mobility in the Textile Industry, a case study that provides lessons for the process of shifting industrial capital to developing economies.

English’s article, “‘I . . . Have a Lot of Work to Do’: Cotton Mill Work and Women’s Culture in Matoaca, Virginia, 1888-1895,” was recognized by the Organization of American Historians as one of the previous year’s best American history essays in 2008.

Will the Pandemic Set Women Back?

English and Kelly Pike worry that the economic fallout from COVID-19 will reverse recent gains in gender equality.

Esther Ngumbi is an assistant professor of entomology and African-American studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She has founded numerous organizations focused on empowering farmers and young people in Kenya. For example, Oyeska Greens is working to revolutionize agriculture along the Kenyan coast. The Dr. Ndumi Faulu Academy aims to ensure that all children have access to a quality education. And Spring Break Kenya, through which Ngumbi has mentored over 5,000 young people, connects university students to public service.

Ngumbi has received three US patents for her research into the use of microbial inoculants to promote growth and enhance tolerance to drought stress in multiple crops.

A Pandemic of Hunger

Ngumbi warns that the COVID-19 crisis is aggravating food insecurity in developing and developed countries alike.
